Tohnichi was founded in 1949 and at that time quality control was in its infancy in Japan. Tohnichi realized the importance of bolt tightening management and in 1951 produced the first torque wrench in Japan. Since then the torque wrench has spread in popularity and has now become an indispensable component in the automobile industry and has developed along with the growth of the Japanese auto industry.
Tohnichi built its reputation as a torque manufacturer. In 1956, Tohnichi introduced the model "QL" torque wrench, which uses a toggle mechanism. A year later the "LTD" torque driver and "OT" torque meter followed. As the Japanese domestic market grew so did Tohnichi's product line. Tohnichi first captured the world's attention with the introduction of the first air torque tool "Uni-Torque", which won the Tokyo Invention Prize in 1968.
In order to service the growing market in the 1970's, Tohnichi expanded it sales network to cover all of Japan. Further advancements in the 1980's led to the development of digital torque products.
Demand grew globally and Tohnichi opened up two subsidiary offices: Tohnichi Europe and Tohnichi America. Tohnichi had become a world wide torque supplier.
In the 1990's the use of torque products spread into a variety of other fields including information technology, construction, and medical devices. Tohnichi set out to be the world leader in the torque field. Tohnichi established a more substantial presence overseas by developing its service network, along with exhibiting at the Tokyo Motor Show, and acquiring the international quality standard ISO9001.
In 1999 during our 50th Anniversary year, the new "Torque Center" in Tokyo was opened to showcase Tohnichi's products, training, and technical resources to the public. The same year Tohinichi's technical publication, "Torque Handbook" was honored with the MITI Prize of the 20th Japan Industrial Advertising Award. At the beginning the 21st Century Tohnichi acquired the international environmental management standard, ISO14000 and began production at its new manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China.
Today, Tohnichi torque wrenches are used in all types of industry all over the globe. As the world's premier manufacturer of torque equipment, Tohnichi continues to innovate. It has preserved it craftsmanship in quality in manufacturing while seeking to provide technical services and support to promote increased product safety.
